History of the West Valley Lutheran Thrift

Staffed by volunteers primarily from local ELCA West Valley Churches our Thrift has raised and distributed over $5 million dollars to churches and charities since it’s inception.  The thrift was started in 1994 as a way to fund new missions and local charities.

One of the reasons the West Valley Thrift Store was opened was to give American Lutheran Church's annual rummage sale a longer life. This Sun City Church wanted a place to "store" their rummage sale items all year, but volunteers thought if they could just staff this space they might be able to raise even more money to give away. The idea took hold and grew.  We still have some of those founding members working in the store today... fifteen years later!

Of course, it took one person’s vision and dedication to make the difference.  Dot Nelson, a church member and volunteer manager, put up $40,000 of her own money to establish the Thrift in 1994 and the success of the WV Lutheran Thrift paid her back in 6 months.  Dot passed away a few short years after starting the WV Lutheran Thrift but she worked passionately as the Volunteer Manager as long as she was able.

The Thrift has always been located in the Sun Bowl Plaza but has grown over the years and expanded to additional storefronts in the mall.
